Sustainable management of North African Oases

Support to the integrated and sustainable management of historic oasis landscapes in North Africa.

Oases are real, tangible spaces where man has fostered life thanks to his great knowledge of the environment and his ability to use the resources it offered him, transforming the hostile territory to make it habitable. They are fragile places of great natural and cultural wealth.

The threats facing these arid areas are drought, desertification and the scarcity of economic opportunities, which are leading to increasingly pressing emigration.

The indisputable heritage value of the cultural landscapes of the historical oases, as well as the economic and development opportunities that this can provide, are the subject of this study, which proposes the identification, characterisation and cataloguing of the oases of Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt.
