Oasis Campus Inzerki

The Oasis Campus focused on traditional building techniques
& habitat sustainability

TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES

In Inzerki we will delve into the local architecture and its traditional construction techniques, such as dry stone, tapial and adobe. We will make roofs with juniper wood and earthen plasters and tadelakt, always with the help of local masters and apprentices.

We will document the old oil mill.

    RESILIENT LANDSCAPES

The pre-Saharan valley in which Inzerki is located is a sustainable habitat, where the architecture is almost carved into the mountainside, built with materials from the environment, and where agriculture and livestock have been the engines of development of the people.

We will walk through the valley, the orchards and the palm grove.

    BEEKEEPING & INTANGIBLE HERITAGE

The ancient apiary of Inzerki dates back to the 16th century and is a UNESCO heritage site. The richness of the flora of Inzerki has been and is a natural resource exploited both for the development of beekeeping and for the collection and sale of aromatic and medicinal plants. We will learn about both trades from the local population.

    THE WORKSHOP

The OASIS CAMPUS workshop is part of the Terrachidia ONGD project, a commitment to the local development of small communities through the enhancement of their architectural and cultural heritage.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring the participant closer to Inzerki, its architecture and its centenary beekeeping tradition, by working together with its people in their daily tasks, such as construction or beekeeping, which will allow us to learn more about their history, their territory and their culture.

Inzerki is a small Berber village in the region of Argana, northeast of Agadir, Morocco. It is located in a mountainous landscape, next to a river that allows life in the valley and where in 1520 was built the largest and oldest apiary in the world, the “Rucher of Inzerki”. Today, the apiary is still used by a few families, whose bees take advantage of the rich flora that grows all around Inzerki. The inhabitants of Inzerki have been collecting and selling medicinal and aromatic plants from the valley since time immemorial, and this is one of the most important economic activities of the population.

In this mountain landscape, the palm grove and orchards have made room, allowing the creation of the settlement, where architecture and nature are intimately linked.

The old oil mill is one of the most unique buildings of Inzerki, where we still find the old pressing beam and other building structures, which will be restored in the workshop.

The aim is to open the place to respectful travelers, interested in its heritage, in the local culture and in the possibilities it offers. The organized activities take into account the peculiarities and traditions of the region, and are tools for the preservation of both its cultural and natural heritage, as well as being catalysts for the creation of employment in the area and contributing in an effective and equitable way to increase the economic income of its inhabitants and to attenuate the migration to the cities that, due to lack of work, has so severely affected the village in recent years.

You will learn the traditional techniques of building with earth and dry stone, working on the execution of a real and useful project: the recovery of the old oil mill. You will learn about traditional beekeeping.

    TERRACHIDIA

Terrachidia is a project for the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage. We work in places threatened by depopulation and climate change, which are at risk of disappearing and with them their memory. We work in historic centers and rural enclaves, where architecture, inhabitants and environment form an indissoluble triad.
    We protect cultural landscapes.
